Documenting An Awareness of Design IDT590 - Building Art as Design

I've noticed there are a few places in Oneonta where brick walls were once blank and empty, are now elaborately decorated. Over past few years store owners have paid artists to add artwork to their buildings. I think this adds character and makes a strong statement about the city its history and community.

  1. Hi John,

I really like the idea of painting walls to add some life to empty spaces. It's even better when it tells a story about that particular city. There's a show on NBC called Parks & Recreation. The government office where the employees work is covered with murals and paintings throughout the building for visitors to see the history of the town. Granted, the paintings have a comical undertone, it's still a great idea. Here's an example:

  2. John,

I noticed that a lot of art work like this one expresses "community" and other "local" feels to the associated business. Ultimately businesses want their potential customers to feel at home while they are "visiting" and the art work is definitely a tool for that idea.

Lastly, the use of complimentary colors and primary colors are exercised greatly with a simple tool such as "sidewalk chalk", spray paint.

    Simplicity sells.
